In Ms. Gruwell’s class at Long Beach Wilson High School, Maria wrote about her experiences when she and her fellow Freedom Writers began writing in diaries that were later compiled and published under the title The Freedom Writers Diary. Since then, Maria has traveled across the country speaking to teachers, administrators, at-risk youth, and community leaders about the power of education and the need for educators to give students a second chance.
